Party Time Here!

Last night I had a houseful of girls here . 6 to be exact and then my two boys .
There was a dance at the highschool for sec 3 and they all came here to sleep last night
Bear was at a girl's house so we got him at 12:30am . The girls got home at midnight . Through it all Chase was trying to study (in the living room ! )

All that to say it was a crazy night and Hubby and I went to bed well past 2am and of course work this morning where they all have a day off . We left our door open as we were scared that one of the girls  ( no names !! ) was going to sneak into the boys bedrooms !!

So all of this made me feel ..... Well ... Alive again
We used to put so much emphasis on our kids social lives and having their friends over and getting to know them ... But for some reason last couple of years have done less and less . Lack of energy ? Motivation ? Scared of teen world ?  Other stuff going on? Self absorbed ? Focusing on other family stuff ? Selfish ? I don't know ... But we went through a bigger dry spell in this as we used to be amazing at it . We still often see their friends but are not "the" place anymore

In the last month I have noticed this deficit and placed intentional focus on it more . I am using our free time to have thier friends over more . During the week - on weekends  at cottage . Prioritizing it all more again . Even next week Chase's new really good friend coming over as I demanded I meet him even thought Chase claims he " is way to old for this "

It's funny how when we focus on some things in life - things change .

It was damn hard and scary having these teens here last night in many ways . Now conversations have shifted from " let's show you a dance ! " to what boy got suspended who had alcohol in his bag at the dance to them all pairing off with boyfriends and talking obsessively about that . To my boys actually having any interest whatsoever in hanging with Beauty's friends . The conversations  , the interests , the topics . Everything has changed and change scares me

I feel the peer pressure too as we are always way behind the times with our kids . All of these girls are allowed their boyfriends at their cottages and on trips with them ... While I am still thinking I am so generous to allow mine one Valentine's Date .Truly thought was so nice of me and not strict

I am confused where my values lie . What I think is right . And wrong . And what may be right for me might be wrong for my girl ? Or opposite ? I feel the pull of peer pressure - of what my friends think of me and what other parents think of me . What my daughter thinks of me . It's like being a teen all over again myself ! Lol Everyone seems to have a different opinion on this subject!!! and I like them all!

It's a tough and beautiful stage just as every phase with my kids seems to be

But it felt amazing to have a houseful of their friends just like the old days ( 2 yrs ago and every year before that ) I hugged and hugged those girls and never wanted to let them go . I adore them - I truly do . And they scare me to with their self confidence and assertiveness  and power and beauty . My own daughter glows with friends and is adored . I love seeing that for her. These girls are power houses-I cant wait to see where life takes them all.

And I will never forget after one of the new girls  met me and hubby and chase and bear she turns to me in French y and says " Beaute fatale ta famille !!! " (everyone has fatal beauty in your family)

I love their aliveness . And how alive they make me feel. For the first time in a while I felt like dressing cool today:)

(And they stills scare me too)

There is something about raising teens that we feel we come undone oursleves . It's such a challenge . So confusing . Sometimes I have no clue if I am doing it right or wrong . With three of them here two years apart I seem to be dealing with every teen issue under the sun all at once in a rotation . That being said I feel in my element - and alive with happiness and stress and self doubt . I am so much better as a teen mom than I was of young kids . I feel like with each new experience I live with them - I am more capable and we are closer with each disagreement and each rage and problem . It's such a damn hassle but so needed to live this all with them-one frustrating beautiful moment at a time (with chase had a huge houserules talk for 2 hrs too amidst this all!)

I feel in my element

And scared !!!

Absolutely Hard and Totally Beautiful Stage

I have described the later teen years ( age 16. 5 and older ) as very similar in my opinion to the newborn through the terrible twos .

It is such a rough stage to raise at this age ( older teen and young adult ) an so annoying and frustrating many days of the week when you literally feel you may pull your hair our from the nonsense and watching them make decisions that you know will cost them so much later on

That being said on my opinion it is by far the most beautiful too . It is an honor and a privilege. Its is in so many ways seeing every seed you planted ( and the ones you did not ! ) come to full fruition. They keep the parts of you and how you brought them up that they agree with close to their hearts and throw the rest of it out like yesterday's trash

As parents we learn a lot about ourselves and our methods through this process! Nothing like a mirror up to your face with reality like an older teen to show you where you messed up royally . I hear myself saying so often " hope you make the right decision for yourself ! All the best of luck !! " ( and then go throw up in bathroom )

Or like the other night where you realize  your parenting was fabulous :)

Chase and i had a big date an Assante conference with hundreds of other clients . They are our valued financial investors for more than 20
Yrs now and chase as of 18 their client too . So he and i went and had the best nignt ever . The financial speech was ok ( chase liked it more than me ) but the keynote was so inspirational about the one of two québécois who made it to the top of everest among many other massive lifetimes adventures and hard obstacles.
We listened with tears in our eyes and admiration

We had jokes between us ( pesto and ceasear salad kits on grocery lists on boring financial speech anyone ? ) or chairs from the dollar store that felt like we would collapse at any moment ! Lol

I adore sharing life with him . With  all my teens . He made this ordinary event extraordinary  for me . And it helped him saying he thought i was the best dressed woman in the room ! A rare compliment ( vs usual critic) as he likes when i wear my two more expensive power suits

He loved the newness of it all and the crowd and gifts and networking. I take it all for granted as my daily business life . He appreciates it  through new eyes

And i offered him a glass of wine and he said no and he insisted to drive both ways and let me take a selfie of us together on our date . He made my day

So often we think his dad and i , how much easier it would be to have him live away as of next year university .. In so many ways would be easier as not a piece of cake living with a young adult at all

But we would all be missing out too. on watching him grow and mature and reject us as he grows into his own and embrace us when he needs us . There is a lot more growing up to do all of us together in this family and a lot more fun to be had

I hope he chooses to stay home for 1-4 more years... I really do .
I know we will make it work if he is 3-5 hrs away i know we will . But i also know the benefits of proximity and sharing daily life as i did and still do
With my mom which has always been the biggest gift of mine and my children's lives having her so close by

I don't  want just the holidays and smiles . I want it all . The dirty dishes even and the laundry they do on their own and not do for a month . And i know skype exists but for me not at all the same . Its all smiles and happy  or too busy to even bother

To me its the daily that i want to still be part of . The good the bad and the ugly . All of it - for a little bit longer . After university undergraduate it is time to move out but i hope he enjoys this all enough to chose to live at home  even for 1-2 extra years . But as we know healthy young adults and healthy family dynamics are hardly about what the parents want or what they feel is best  for the young adult - but what the person chooses for themselves that is best for their life or their unique learning process

The best parenting skill we have is the ability to let go
And we may  have to as of less than a year from now

I love you chase from deep deep within my heart
Whenever you choose to have life take you i will respect and support you and we will make it all Work out

Putting Trust to the Test

This has been a really teen issue week,

First off our daughter is leaving for the weekend to a good friend of hers cottage and 17 girls are going and 7 boys. To sleepover in tents. This was not an easy decision for us. I had many many conversations with the hosting Mother about it and expressed my concerns and got total reasurrance. This is all new. We are trusting our girl. This scares me.

Secondly after dinner tonight both boys put their phones away and ask Beauty to put hers away and take her down to basement and closed the doors for more than half an hour and I can hear them engaged in deep and serous conversations. I wanted so much to listen with my ear to the door, but I chose not to. I could hear their tones and disappointment but I also heard my daughter listening and speaking.

I was dying to know but I did not ask. When the boys came up they both hugged me and said "having a teen girl is so hard!"

I am so grateful that the three of them share something so special. And I am so happy that she has the boys and that they have a little sister. I am grateful that she has lots of older people looking out for her. I was happy that the boys chose not to tattle on her as they usually do and deal with her directly. It made my heart swell with pride.

I won’t ever know what was said tonight in those 30 minutes but I totally trust that whatever it was it was good for all of them.

This week I have completely trusted in the capability of our three children

And doing this? Feels right and good no matter the outcome

The fun continues!!

For 10 yrs now on this sunday night of july , we have dropped the other 2 kids off and come back to Trent alone . We sleep here and only go home to work for 1pm monday. And then all week we work super hard with no breaks all day and then each night of that week we go out to dinner the two of us .

That Sunday starts it all off

And this one was even better as we weren't alone but we had Bear !!!! He came home for a precious 17 hrs . We  dropped off beauty at camp and it was so cool arriving and watching bear at work with the team welcoming all the new campers. They all surround the car as it arrives and dance and sing camp songs

When it was our turn they started all shouting beauty's name and then she got out of the car and ran into her brothers embrace. She loves those boys such more more than she lets on !!! Then we got to hug him and hug him again . A great thing about both boys is they are super super affectionate with us and have no issue on this on front of friends and co workers . Was soooooo amazing to see our boy

We laughed our head off minutes later when he was taken aside by his boss and told not to favour specific pretty girls and to keep professional on his welcomes . When bear told hom that girl was his little sister and not some hot chick he was after .... We all  roared of laughter!!!

Beauty settled on quickly with her three camp besties and was in her glory to be there this year . We had  little tears as we said bye to our girl- but she did not this year!!

Bear was in his glory to come home for a night . We went for groceries as per his request and bought a ton of snacks for the rest of his two weeks there . Then chose his fave dinner : steak and fries with portabello mushrooms and parsley sauce and oven baked chocolate chip cookies

He lay on the couch and watched soccer and had a nap and loved relaxing with his phone ( which be has to sneak there in the bathroom  on his job breaks so is very coveted )

( one surprise to all
Of us is that even as instructors they wont let them have their phones in the evenings before  bed or break times  and we all found this over the top for 16.5 yrs olds . They are being treated like babies and like in prison! . I get the rule for campers but not for the monitors and we were all not too happy and like most of
The parents have just told him To lay low and use it for a few mins at night in bed .
If he had known that he would not have had any communication with his friends , the girl he likes , his siblings etc he never would have signed up for this month job . Summer is too precious and he works so hard at his studies and sports all year long- we decided he deserved to listen to music and be in contact with the world before bed ( some may not agree this was the right approach and maybe it was not but felt it was best overall )

I felt happy for him to see him enjoying himself here for the night .

We went on a sunny evening boat ride and he and i drove the boat to the trailer together for hubby and i to be able to bring on home on the lake for after work this week

We will watch a great movie after dinner and enjoy our boy .

We got to see chase also for another few mins on Saturday afternoon too . We hung out with beauty  and her bff all day in the pouring rain in the pool at home and laughed and had great conversations .
It poured all weekend but it was all so nice to be with our girls too

If i am honest though it will be really  wonderful  too have them all safely back at camp and their summer jobs and have this work week alone ( with fun evenings as a couple ) and our first 6 days of vacation alone at the cottage the two of us .
I love being with our kids but i also love seeing them living their own lives ( and not having yo wait up for them
To get home at night )!

What an unexpected gift this weekend was and  now looking forward to the next two weeks too with my Protector

Our LlifeSaver Guy

(will add pics this weekend as not working!!!!)

This is a huge year for Bear . Sauveteur National ! Canadian federation certified camp counsellor ( if he makes it through the next 4 weeks ! ) Drivers permit ! ( he drove in to camp yesterday which was very cool )

He is an amazing guy . Truly
So determined and smart and accomplished . So kind and caring and compassionate . So handsome and gorgeous . So so so so so stubborn and hard to bring up !!!

Last week he had his first life guarding job at 25 dollars an hour ! At a private pool and enjoyed great weather and his fave Lebanese lunch and a whole pool of kids to watch. He felt like a million bucks(and almost made that amount too!)
He even brought his lifeguard kit complete with barriers in case had to give cpr . I love this kid .

Now a bit of a mess as dropped him for 4 week certification Sunday and for many many reasons won't get into ... He is not happy . That is a long time of not being happy :(((

Anyways praying for best outcomes and for this usually resilient and adaptable kid to have a great summer despite some major last minute obstacles . If not- I have assured myself ( more than him ) that there is always a plan b to be had

Congrats my Pepsi Cola guy on being able to now officially save lives !!!l

CDF Visit!

This was an exciting weekend and weekend and next week as lots happening

Besides Beauty's dance show which I posted on separately - we had our wonderful friends the CDF gang ( family of 7) over for the long weekend . It was cool as we were all together but also had our individual family commitments like the dance show and mother visits etc . It was a great weekend as usual filled with tons of yummy food and restaurants , great walks and talks.

The funniest part ever was when they got here before us and wanted the wifi code so their eldest son texted Chase to ask him

" cock-slap-dick56"

Chase!!!!!!!!

And they believed him (based on the mere fact we named our christmas Elf "Balls  ") so there they all sat typing in this wifi obscene code and trying it different ways with capitals etc..

This goes down as one the funniest memories of my life -for real.

What was really different about this visit was that it mirrored our real lives very distinctly : our kids are no longer kids for the most part they are now all teens or almost teens or just out of teenhood . And having 8 of these creatures together ... Does present some challenges !

To sum it up : Alone together . Yes all the seem to do is stare at their individual screens unless literally forced to do otherwise . Every moment of the weekend .

And that part really irritated the adults . All of us .We even had a debate about it with one of the teens which was cool in and of itself and got them off their phones for a while in order to debate ! At least they were all engaged in this part and cool to hear the different perspectives that are mostly generational

It was hard though as tough to see a bunch of teens so excited to see eachother and so alone being together . Made me very worried  about this generation and what I may have done as a parent to not prevent this .

It has all moved from more family visits to more adult visits with kids sitting around staring at their phones . Thank goodnessnes for their two younger ones who brought some life to the party !

Despite all they are all wonderful and good kids-just a rough stage!

Thank goodness Savvy and I are both the type of moms that force them at points to do otherwise so there were moments of chatting with meals and walks and activities etc but not enough of them .

Yet felt so good for us adults to realize we are leading parallel lonely lives and face many of the same reality and challenges of raising adolescents

Then we stayed up late all catching up and debating after beauty dance show and then I left for a business trip in Peru early Sunday morning.  They  all stayed and spent the day with hubby and our kids and then by end of afternoon all went their separate ways with lots on schedule before our trip to Italy at the end of this week

Our gang went up to cottage and got all the summer stuff organized and CDF's moved onto savvy moms place for a visit

I don't even have a  picture of the visit of the kids !!! I wonder why ? (They all roll their eyes at me too much ? I give up trying ?)
At least I have a few great pics of the adults ! From our long walk to the village for icecream ( we sent the kids on their own )

Was a great visit and always is. So thankful for these wonderful friends

Launching him

( I wrote this weeks ago but Chase has been annoying me a little lately so did not post it! Seeing that this is his last week of exams and he has impressed me yesterday by saying “I love school” it is time to post!)

It really occurred to me this week that my son is an adult when the doctor called and left a message that he has an apt on Tuesday and that he needs to fast for 24 hrs and abstain from alcohol for 72 hrs for the blood tests.
What's next a prostate exam? Hubby joked.

Then realized even more how his life is his life now when later I gave the message and Chase said “I can't abstain from alcohol
For 72 hrs there is a huge party Saturday night and my buddy rented a condo downtown for his birthday and we are all staying there! "
(And I thought we were all together at the cottage Saturday night playing monopoly and eating bonbons)

Your problem buddy! Figure it out with your doctor

Our son is growing up. And not just in this more annoying alcohol part related expected ways.... He is launching himself into life.

The other day I got an email and it said " xyz is inviting you to accept him as a contact on LinkedIn” and that person was our son!!! His dad and I got it at the same time.

As I read his profile which I did not even know he had ... I am not kidding that tears of joy started streaming down my face. I saw everything we have worked so hard for since the moment he was born in that profile. All the values all the hard work -all the nagging and the discipline and coaching and pushing. There is was in his LinkedIn profile.

I don't care how success is defined. I don't care what marks he gets in university or what career he chooses. All the success I needed to see from him was right there in front of me.

I was speaking to one of my bffs last month about a blog post she wrote about her own eldest son ( she has an older step son too ) and the blog " my non swearing son " she and I have worked tirelessly  on deliberate parenting and very often share the ups and downs of our efforts . What I realized in this discussion was how our parenting is paying off ! Finally!! I saw so much of her parenting and her values in her son and this blog post. As she tells me more and more about him and their conversations and the direction he wants to go in beyond this blog ... I see her brand all the way
Same on my eldest son, as I read that LinkedIn profile I saw myself written all over it

What an amazing feeling!!!!!! (Gosh I know so narcissistic but a great feeling to know something you have said has been heard over 18.5 yrs!!)

I love watching his launching process. Something big had happened to our son in this first year of cegep - he is becoming an adult and becoming his own unique person. He decided a few weeks ago that he is super interested in event planning and connected with a dozen people over a week to networks about this. Really? Chase? Seriously he did this?
Four days later the phone rings ( on our way up to a sacred family weekend to the cottage of course ) and he was asked to mc a big DJ event at that same even in honour of the a big fundraising event for the Children’s Wish Foundation . He gave us a big speech about how that we had to turn right around and drive him back home as his whole life we have been teaching him to network and create opportunities and take risks and put himself out of his comfort zone and now he had the opportunity.. And that we had better support him!!!

And so we did. 5 hrs of driving them afternoon. And our son with zero experience stood up in front of 500 people to introduce the 12  Djs for a great cause.

And then this week he told me that he contacted all 12 of the Djs “to expand his network" (good thing since so far only has mom and dad as contacts on LinkedIn! ) and wrote them each a personal email
on their particular performance at the event and asked them to keep him in mind for future events. And with one two hours they had all written back to connect

And I almost had a heart attack of joy for real right there on the kitchen

Then I had a gorgeous younger colleague here this week one evening to facilitate part 2 of our family vision building exercise and at the end Chase ask her to speak in private. I was so so so so scared he was going to ask her for her number!!!!! But he instead asked her about life coaching for him. On his own. Without me there. He did this !!!!!!!!! (Another blog most on our part 2 sessions later this weekend)

Anyways there are definite cons to having a kids this age ( many many many ) and it is damn hard many days of the week . The lifestyle, the parties, the attitude, the impulsivity, the attitude (oh I said that already?)

But nothing could ever replace how much I adore having the privilege and honour of watching this kid grow up right before my eyes. It is the most beautiful process on watch besides the miracle of birth. Really and truly.

And yesterday he says to be in the car (him driving of course! )“Mom I don't think going away to university is for me ... 3 yrs. is too long to be away from home. And I don't want to be tempted to party all week long. Weekends are good enough for me. During the week I want to eat well and healthy and work out at the gym and study during the weekdays and keep my focus. And besides I would die eating Kraft dinner all year. I need salmon to gain weight and can't afford it! Home is good for me”

We shall see where this little peppercorn firecracker goes (my dad used to call me that when he was impressed with my enthusiasm and drive for life :)))
The world is ahead and I can't wait to see him explore it. Fall on his face a million times and pick him back up and keep going.

What a privilege to be a parent. Nothing else I have ever done in my life remotely compares to this fulfillment. Watching the outcomes of the most important work of my life coming to fruition in its own unique and beautiful way.

I am so grateful (today)

Teen jobs

If crazy in life how much kids need to learn
And then teens –a huge learning curve
Even as adults it is like a constant phase of learning

It's interesting for me to observe my own process of having changed careers almost a year ago now and how some days I feel on top of the world and other ones not so much. For some reason this work week is getting to me. Everyone seems to bee postponing meetings or contracts or just not replying to important emails or not paying invoices on time.
My change of career this week is getting to me. Other weeks I feel it is best thing I have ever done in my life.

It's a process and I am so grateful for the learnings it is providing me. What I like about certain jobs and what I don't like about others , what I excel at and what I am weak in , what conditions my full potential is maximized in and where it is squashed .
How much risk tolerance I can take and how risk adverse I can be .How important the social aspect is to me and how I manage in other ways without it.
Admin work. Running a corporation. Subcontracting. Technology . I am doing it all. I don't have that team to delegate to anymore and it is forcing me to be baptized by fire and learn it ... And quickly!

But while I am in this process of my own  work and change and learning I am mostly enjoying watching our three children experience much of the same thing.

This will be Chase’s third year of real work at various jobs and is amazing to see him bloom in this way. To question things, To find his preferences and his own tolerance levels. For him to figure out how committed (or not committed he is). To see what he is willing to sacrifice for money or the ethics of his commitment and when he is not willing to sacrifice and why.

Has been so far : a tutor , an admin , and outside worker , a dirt bike instructor , a ski instructor , a school janitor , a cegep bookstore worker , a waiter and now as of tonight an office janitor ( hubby hired him to clean his workplace every two weeks and Chase’s preference of time
Is 10-midnight !!!

Bear tutored for a couple of years and always loved the Xmas tips. He also was an office worker, and outside worker and now his first real jobs a ski instructor and occasional waiter. This has been a big year for him as all fairly new. And he too is finding his way and very different these two brothers are when it comes to work! Both unique in their own ways

And now Beauty entered the real workforce tonight too (gosh it's lonely around here as almost midnight ) Beauty has done more occasional babysitting but this new gig is high paying babysit and looks like she will be called back more regularly and for a couple of
Weeks in summer. I have never seen her look prouder counting that cash and was thrilled that the job included a trio from the McDonald across the street! She will be babysitting it looks like a few weeks in summer. She is such a good skier from all her years of competition that also by next winter will be a full ski instructor at age 15. This is young!
I told her I am counting on her paying the mortgage if my own career starts going wrong ;))

I think it is also important for kids at a fairly young age to manage a lot of their own schedules and parts of their lives. A colleague the other day who has 2 teens who just started working was asking me the other day how I made sure I got them up and out to their jobs ? I thought that was a funny question! I don't get them there at all in general unless they have asked exceptionally for a lift or need one. They have been trained from a very early age for school to wake up on their own with an alarm, make their breakfast, make their lunches, plan out the bus schedule etc. which has been an amazing learning platform for the jobs now.

For our own pleasure and theirs we have always two days a week made big breakfasts in the morning for them, and gotten up out them some days too as we all enjoy it but we have always made sure that since quite young there are a couple of days a week they fend for themselves fully in the morning so that they get used to it.
This year we added on having Chase do the morning getting up driving routine with them one day a week just to make sure he does not get too used to the cegep late class schedule and still functions at 6:00 am like he used to when he was in high school. It's funny to hear him (from the comfort of our bed!) telling the other two to hurry up and get in the car!!

I worked all summer every summer as well as often part time in school year as of about 14 or 15 and made a ton of money that would last me the whole year and for travel in college too . I used to hide my money under my mattress (original eh?) and count it every night and I was so proud of it. That I could pay my way and had savings. Made me feel so worthwhile and good and successful. I still adore counting money :)

But kids learn through work. I think a great experience. Friends said to me the other day that her teens won't be able to work as too busy with hockey and that is the same type of commitment etc. I disagree. I think sports are great and also camps and other activities but not as a replacement to working. I think work ethic is developed through work and also self-pride and motivation. I think it teaches some major lif skills.

Very hard on the parents schedules though!! A weekday night  tonight  and I had one to get at 10:30pm and another at midnight! It also ruins summers and holidays and days off and time off as a family. And not great for chores and homework getting done as the kids working are never ever home. Makes for a bit (a lot!) of a chaotic house and life and schedules. I have found since having 2/3 over the age 16 yrs  has really made a difference in our lives and schedules. 14yrs  to me is still pretty manageable as I still somewhat control some of her time.

I knew this day would come
I dreaded it on so many levels
Now it is here and I am embracing it in many ways (and still resenting it on other levels)
I feel resigned in many ways to just accept that what was... Is Not anymore
And I feel grateful to watch the process of our children grow into themselves through work

As I end this blog I just texted Chase and said “are you done yet? Can I come get you now that it is midnight? “

And he wrote “I like cleaning a lot. It is good actually to do janitorial work and reminds me of the job at the school” last summer “(this teen is just so cute and adorable sometimes)

And I realize that I am proud of all of them and the work and contributions they make at midnight or any time of day. It is worth the sacrifices we have to make to have them work and grow. Mostly I am in awe of the gift of awareness they have of themselves through the process

Growing Them Up

I like this expression (not sure if I made it up or heard it somewhere) . It seems to take on its own importance and urgency as your kids near the age of majority at 18 yrs. old-as everything really changes at this age. Your child is child no more and can vote, is legally responsible for his actions and in Quebec drink alcohol. So very much changes. If I look at who Chase is now at 18 yrs old and who he was at 17 yrs. old there is really no similarity at all. Nor the way we treat him. It’s amazing to see and be part of such a shift.

I have been thinking lately about the autonomy of children into teens and into adulthood and what we do as parents to encourage or discourage that. Savvy wrote a cool blog on it a few weeks ago and inspired me to also thing about it. Where we as are parents really good at letting go and where are we hanging on?  Have we prepared them enough for life ahead?  Savvy and I also have great discussions on this as we both have boys very similar in age and  both have to move from controlling a lot of what they do to letting go of most of it.

Also I find in our family anyways Chase often sets the pace. When he starts changing everyone else starts changing too as they are all so close in age. What Beauty is doing at 14 is not what he was allowed to do/ Bear at 16 follows him very closely. When you have three teens all within 21 -25 months-the ages just kind of blur. Chase sets the pace in so many ways and always has.

Chase at 18 yrs. old now and in Cegep is really living his own life. And in general fairly respectfully under our roof. He certainly manages 100 percent of his schedule and tells us most the time anyways where he is (but not always) and definately does not ask permission anymore. He is in some ways a third adult and parent in the house in that he does his share of the driving with the other two kids and is very safety conscious about that and concerned that Beauty is picked up when dark vs taking the bus. He eats at often different times than us and often different much more protein led healthier diets than us too (he gives himself a cheat day per week only!). He drops courses and decides what he will do about making them up, and he takes the consequences of the bad decisions he sometimes makes.
There are certain dinners and occasions we expect him to be at and strongly encourage it to happen (aka scream and cry in his face) and others that we have had to let go. Sometimes a week can go by and I have not had 5 alone mins with him.

The other day he left dishes in his room and a total mess as usual and I told the cleaning ladies that come twice a month not to clean it and not to wash his sheets. Today he was 20 minutes late for his ski lessons he teaches and he lost his bonus of the whole year. He understands consequences and lives with the impact.

But we have also held his hand a lot before this and helped him along quite a bit in certain situations (by 17 he was very very autonomous, but at 16 we coddled him about more. We have always guided our kids toward certain jobs and sometimes even helped them through to write emails to the boss etc. when they get gifts we sit and watch while they send thank you tests, in school we managed until cage that they were studying and at what times (now in Cegep almost no studying occurs and we just hold our breath and wait of the marks!) We often said yes much more than no in social situations and always go out of our way to make it easy for them to socialize with friends. When they are in trouble were often help them dig their way out. Is this the right way or the good way? Are we doing favors to a kid between 16-18 yrs. old to do this? I truly don’t know the answer….

On the house front we don’t help much and as early as 10 yrs old never did. They do their chores, Bear does all the laundry for the family, the state of their rooms is ignored, they make many of their own meals even we can’t be there, they packed all their lunches since about 9yrs. old, they even drive up in a snowstorm this morning to the hill from the city and were stuck in 3 hrs of traffic and snow. They take care of the house in lots of ways (with very low standards!) and they make sure they are safe. In that way I feel they are pretty grown up. I have no doubts that if tomorrow they were all three alone they could fend for themselves very successfully.

But we have also not been great examples. Often the sink has a pile of dirty dishes; sometimes our newly cleaned floors have footprints of mud across it. In general our house looks good enough but not half as clean or tidy as most. This conscious decision has consciously gone into my basket c of items to let go of. I feel that if I focus too much on that there won’t be time for the more important basket an items of mine. Or little energy for them. Again is this the right way? I honestly have no clue.

So on the autonomy operational side I think we have done a pretty fine job of preparing them. Self-confidence wise too very very good. But what about on the values side? Family history side? Sharing our stories and our thoughts? Not so great. Maybe better than many but not good enough in my books. And most has to do with a lack of time and energy vs a lack of good intentions really. As Chase turned 18 and Bear 16 their schedules don’t have anything to do with us anymore (and we still have the 14 yr. old who will turn 16 and 18 one day too!) Chase works out 5 times a week, tutors economics for his college, is a ski instructor, is a dirt bike instructor, studies and has his own life. Bear is all over the place in school too as a ski instructor, camp instructor, drivers Ed, kayak competitions, and national lifeguarding courses. There is literally hardly any time to even speak to them anymore (this is not a joke as with working they are always studying, working or finding a few well deserved mins to relax and don’t want to bother with parent conversation)

But what I do feel good about has been this 18 yrs. old stage so far. He makes so many crappy decisions and other really really great ones. He exhausts himself and is often chaotic, but then also so strategic and a long term thinker. We just stay out of it. Ignorance is often bliss at this stage. As of Xmas we decided never to check his phone again unless there was a HUGE worry of serious depression or danger (we checked it before that maybe every few months and really did not feel good about this and has always been very controversial) but as of 18 what’s the point? He is entitled to his privacy and also the privilege of making mistakes as a young adult growing up before we step in and help solve things for him. (so much for his privacy last week when Hubby and I found a bag of soil and seeds by his bedside while I was trying to sneak a piece of chocolate !! a whole other very very funny scary blog to come!!!)

But in other ways it all just hurts my heart. To watch the hurt and struggles, to see a ticking time bomb about to explode, to watch what we know is not a good decision turn into a decision that will negatively impact his entire life. And then sometime we do step in (like academics and trying the best we can to guide these right decisions) But is this good or bad? Again I honestly don’t know. My parents certainly did not really guide me or help me making major educational and career decisions (well my dad tried to but that is a story for a whole other blog) and I think I turned out very successfully in these areas- so who knows?
And it’s hard to have a young adult live with you. That is why in many ways I think dorms and out of town University good too as just lets them really live on their own. But there is also something about being adults together that is cool too.

Who’s going to pick up the ingredients for the pad thai tonight?
We need to cut down on the grocery bill if buying 19 clans of salmon this week so here do we cut out?
Who is going to drive the kids this morning as they need to be at school early for a ski trip?

It gives the kids that time to have you grow them up a bit. Be there when they fall and provide still welcomed advice as they are not expecting you are out of the picture fully if they live on their own. It also allows them to also learns the skills of compromise instead of black or grey and learn the concept of “yes you are a legal adult but you live in my home” Now my home has to definately become more of our home when having kids 18yrs old but there will be some rules (as minimal as possible in my opinion) that they will need to just stuck to and abided by. In some ways it’s like living in a commune. But a commune that is not fully democratic and has an autocratic edge.

And in some ways it gives the parents a nice transition to towards being parents and having an empty nest. Allows us some time and space to find our own ways in our careers, our couple and our hobbies. Allows the bandaid to be pulled off in a gentler slower way. But it is damn hard to live with near or adult children. It is messy and chaotic and like watching a war about to happen knowing that you have the answers but can’t shout loud enough from them to hear to prevent all the damage about to occur.

Lately Chase has been exploring the idea to go away for University and I really have mixed feelings about it, I don’t know what is best for him? What is best for us? His life? Our lives? But that is the thing: the decision is not mine anyways at this age. It’s weird to know that a year ago it could have been and that it no longer belongs to me anymore. There are parts of living with young adults that make me crazy and I could do without and there are parts that I adore and treasure. Mostly I think I am just afraid: afraid of a life that doesn’t revolve around the family (imagine how stay at homes moms must feel????)

To be honest, I don’t know if at this point I control less or care less. Maybe a bit of both? And I try to remind myself often that I still do have a 14 yr. old and that she can’t or should not be fully autonomous by this age. Or should she? Again I don’t know the answer. It is all a wait and see,

I always thought our kids would not live away or go way to University but at this stage I really don’t know what they will choose. That is how far away from their thought is am lately. I don’t know what is going on in those heads of theirs (doesn’t help that they work both days of weekends in winter and stuff the rest of weekend so there is barely any interaction and now in weeks bartending course for 18 yrs. old, drivers licence for 16 yrs. old, savour national) all these activities tough on schedule but hopefully prepping them for life to come?

Last weekend SK kids came over for the weekend and when I saw her 5 yr. old wearing a summer dress I asked sk-whats’ with that?  (It was -35) They pack their own suitcases when they travel for a weekend and that’s what she brought!” Again I wish I had done this so much earlier in my kid’s lives s I can’t imagine how this little sweetie will be at 18yrs old. And she managed….she asked  her sister for a sweater and pants later when she got cold . Before she left  she did say “next time jogging pants and a hoody for me!” . OMG I was so impressed. (Ya I am not there yet nor will I ever be. Beauty was dressed to the nines at that age, all girly and fancy and warm! But it was more about me than her in so many ways and I definitely see the benefit of leaving these choices up to the kids).

Our babies will always be our babies. We will never know if our actions were the right or wrong ones. We will never have enough of being parents as was (and is) the best thing we have ever done with the most pleasure and worry and heartache too). What we will know is that we really did do our absolutes deliberate best and that as they learn we learn along with them. We grow up ourselves as much as we try to grow them.

If you really really want to take a good honest look at yourself in the mirror with strengths and weaknesses –take a good hard look at yourself as a parent. It is very revealing and very honest. Who you are as a parent often reflects who you are as a person, friends, a daughter, a cousin, a wife.

Through our children..we grow up too.

The question always remains: am I ready to?

18th Bday Party Chase. Survived and Alive

We did it !
He did it !
I did it !

(this was written more than a week ago and just posted now)

We survived our first teen big party .And not just survived but all enjoyed it very much and  overall was a good experience for all.

(I truly can't believe I am daring to write this before even having gone downstairs to see the house and the state it's in as that is how much trust I have in all of this)

I did stay at my mom’s as planned. Texted and phoned hubby hourly to get news and make sure hubby stayed awake. I came home at 2:30am and tried very hard to sneak on door and just go to bed as was only the 5 sleeping over who were left.
All 5 boys came to door and greeted me and said “thanks for evening!” heavy beer on breath and red watery eyes. Voices a little slurred but still warm, friendly, respectful and kind. Assuring me that house was fine and that party was a blast and telling me how happy they were that things went well. One of them was Chase’s math tutor! (Almost a graduate from university to be a math teacher) guess they are great friends now!
I had stars in my eyes speaking to those boys (young men). How lucky Chase is to be surrounded by such good people.

Hubby was amazing too and not even close to falling asleep. Was still in his work clothes at 2:30 am! Stayed in our room but went down often and said hi and talked to kids a lot. Said all great and all girls totally beautiful! Of course we did not serve alcohol but there was lots flowing anyways but all maturely and respectfully.

He heard 40 sing happy b-day to Chase :)
Hubby ordered two big pizzas (umm two??... See why need a mom??? ) and of course had to order more (two more??) ummm maybe 8 more!! He was surprised that it was gone in a second. He was the perfect party supervisor. Calm cool and collected.

I had the perfect evening too at my mom’s. Went to Gigi pizzeria-my old childhood dig and ate and then back to her house and chatted a lot and then fell asleep a bit on her couch. Maybe pizza was not the best idea after severe gastro two days before?
Ya on my way home 2:15am I had to stop and throw up two times in the snow! I was so paranoid a police would see me and think I was drinking! Or that I would get home and throw up in driveway and teens would think I was drunk!!

Just overall a great evening that wrapped up a very important milestone for our son. His childhood.. His younger adolescence ... This was something different. It was us trusting him.. And he trusting is. It was us acknowledging that he is in a brand new stage of life as more of a partner than a kid to boss around and make decisions for (ok well yes some bossing around still needed!!!!)

This kid makes us so proud
I think we make him proud too

I am proud of this party as was a bit of a finale of what we had always wanted for our teen and expected. Last night  was the package of the labor and result of parenting over 18 yrs. all tied up in one big large messy bow.
And I am proud of myself that I am a parent who knows my own limits and was able to remove myself from a party that I knew would be better off without me there
And enjoy my own precious moments with my own mama

And ok now that it is a week later and just have not had time to post I have noticed a few unusual things around my house.
Let's just say my grocery list is a little obscene? Between Broccoli and Spinch there are a few questionable items which definitely woke me up in the grocery store!

Then there is my labelling machine. Let's just say the first label I printed this week was not something I would want a client to see!

And then of course all school calendars on fridge are written all over if “school is gay "!

And now Chase has been away 6 days in a condo with 10 teens at Mont-Ste Anne and clubbing alot and partying and this all makes me nervous of course as his mom. He is now into the more wild college life and it is harder to watch and get used too (no wonder parents like sending their kids away to college!) This is hard.

Anyways all this stuff just left me to overall accept. If this is the worst of it I will take it! Bring it on
I actually saved the grocery list for Chase to look at one day and show hime that this kind of stuff is what made his friends tick at 18 yrs. old !

The friends who slept over in the morning saw the grocery list and the scribbled on calendar and said “sorry there are a few inappropriate things Tarina that our friends did " I quickly forgave them.
I actually would have been worried of all was perfect. They are teens after all and not robots!!
But of course hard to find that balance between understanding and worrying. Hard to know how open to leave the communication and how closed we should keep it. Certainly feels better to keep it closed and be ignorant but knowing what is going on I believe is better over all for the teens. Nobody said teen years were easy did they???

On Strike

I made the decision last night in bed at 4:30am that I was going on strike for the holidays (16 luscious days actually). I woke up my husband at 4:45am and announced it.
The great thing is that it is not (really) a revenge strike-or trying to get anyone back in particular, or a mean or nasty one. It is just the consequence of some natural occurring events over the last 18 yrs. It was the product of a big blow out with my almost 18 yrs. old son yesterday  now in Cegep and only in exams has the misfortune of being with me at home all week while I am trying to work and he is trying to be teen.

It was also the product of a huge discussion that me, Hubby and that same kid Chase had in front of the fire last night juts the three of us about our parenting styles and some suggestions he had (mostly for my husband in the raising of our other two children. For the first time we allowed to Chase to see our own misalignment on a few issues and did not present a united front. Instead we presented a rather heated discussion with some swear words thrown in. It was an adult conversation and debate in many ways between three adults. Very hard but also  Very awesome! This morning as we woke up…I felt so close to Chase (even though I am on strike)

So how does a woman who literally never cooks or does laundry hardly ever go on strike? How does that happen? What is she striking from?

FROM BEING FORCED TO FOR OVER 18 YRS BEING THE BAD GUY (GIRL!) NAGGER AND DISCIPLINARIAN IN THE FAMILY. A STRIKE FROM NAGGING AFTER CHORES AND ORDER, GETTING OFF TECHNOLOGY, PLANNING FUN THINGS THOSE KIDS ARE INCREASINGLY UNGRATEFUL FOR. A STRIKE FROM NAGGING BASICALLY! (aka :a strike from being me?)

When my husband said last night that he felt that all three kids could not stand me anymore that was it. I cracked. I went on strike.

What I realized in my talk with Hubby and Chase last night? Maybe sometimes they can’t stand me-but they respect me. A ton. And for people who can’t stand me I certainly get a whole lot of texts saying I love you, I miss you and I need your advice Mama. I personally think I am doing a damn good jobJ

So this morning I handed Hubby a diagram of certain parameters we have in our home that must be abided to (order, chores, family time, time outside and away from technology, actives outside of the house) and told him to get to work with all this over the next 16 days of holidays. I told him he is for the next two week within those parameters, do all the nagging, all the discipline, all the planning and all the fun stuff too. And while he is at it he can continue to cook and clean and ask for my help if he wants. When he asked for the grocery list I told him to make one himself. I am not even going to hide the elf!
And he started! Today! It sounds crazy but I actually had:

A SUPER DAY!!! I hardly had any anger or revenge or bad thoughts I just did my thing. Each times the kids would come and ask me to make a decisions like “Can I bring my x-box to the cottage” “what time are we leaving to go do errands?” I simply sent them to their dad to answer1 How liberating! For the next two weeks my kids are puppies and their father is their Master.

Chase came in and said “OMG Daddy is so different from yesterday’s talk-he screamed at me twice already today!” and me? I didn’t notice as was busy bloggingJ))

Anyways for now the strike feels wonderful. Who knows if it will actually last the next two weeks this reversal of roles? Or who knows if it won’t last a lifetime? But something about just  having the goal of staying calm and collected as a cucumber (why is a cucumber considered more serene that a green pepper BTW?) is really really relaxing. Is this how men feel all the time?

I am up to my eyeballs in work, wrapping gifts and life. It’s time for a real break isn’t it? Lucious. (Thank goodness he has not asked me to cook for the next two weeks)
Chase? We may have fought it out yesterday but MAN is you smart. And courageous. And have a good head on your shoulders. Thanks for putting up with these two parents of yours and talking some sense into us. Thanks for the strike!

Note: I am now editing this post before I post it and it is the next morning. I always promised to be honest on this blog so here it goes:
By this morning I am less relaxed. Delegating is hard! Especially when the decisions people make are just plain dumb! Somehow last night at midnight my Hubby allowing Bear to leave the feel good xmas part right at the part of the Xmas lesson and go play video games instead just didn’t sit with me well (ps we have never ever allowed video games at the cottage as the kid is addicted enough at home! )

Ya this strike thing? Not so sure anymore .

I don’t think I am capable (or want) to be a cucumber.
