Jamaica

What an incredible day!!!!!!!

We had a driver for 6 hrs who took us on two excursions and then a nice lunch and dip into the beautiful and pristine Jamaica sea.

I wish the day could have lasted forever. The kids were so incredibly sweet today. Both boys feel somehow like they have to take care of me.. Telling me such and such a rock is slippy or be careful a car is coming. It is so sweet. Beauty also loves this trip and such an affectionate side she is showing.

Dunns river is AMA ZING. I never realized how beautiful and fun it was. I loved every single minute of climbing the falls and wading in the streams. The kids adored this and it was so nice all climbing up and holding hands together. We had a great guide who took lots of good pics allowing us time to just enjoy the moment.

Next excursion might have been the most beautiful scenery I have her seen in my life. A 45 minute tube ride down a beautiful  fresh water tropical river. A mix between lazy river in a tube and white water rafting. Heavenly. So serene and quiet you could hear the crickets in the trees. I have never seen the kids look so happy and relaxed as I did today. There was a break on the river with a swing and Tarzan rope right in the river.

Luscious ride down the river.

These two water excursions were perfectly suited to our preferences. Loved both.

To top it off  30 minute stop at a beautiful beach with a gorgeous view and warm warm water. The lunch we ordered was amazing and one of the best meals of the trip. Jamaican jerk chicken and fries with hot sauce. To save money we only ordered two plates to share... We looked like animals starving when it was served!!

Now back to cruise for a Mamma Mia show at 7pm and another great dinner in the dining room . We have been trying to convince the kids to go to buffet one night but they won't hear of it.. They want fancy all the way since it is "included"

(Included my ass!!  Hahahha)

Loving these excursions . The cruise part is ok but the islands rock. I love my family and in general being angels so far.

Thank god for separate rooms. Makes such a difference in my irritably levels.

Not much down time thus far. Busy busy busy X o xox

Labadi, Haiti

The private island of Haiti belonging to the cruise ship was our first stop. It confused the kids a lot and they asked questions all day about the poverty and corruption all over Haiti . It was a strange feeling to be so sheltered from this on this magical island. We at least could feel that we were adding to the tourism domain- but that was little comfort seeing what we see on the news weekly a out this desperate country.

Aside from this...

Highlights:

GETTING OFF THE SHIP WAS HEAVENLY. The waves and roughness and problem with boat stabilizer made for a very difficult couple of days and night. Hubby and I were up at 4am still talking about how crazy it was to literally not be able to stand up and go to the bathroom without falling over!!!! Chase and I especially were grateful to be on land

Great day!

Fun thing about cruise and excursions is that kids hang out with us a whole lot more than at all inclusive resort .This is good .

We hung out at beach on floating mat all of us:)

Went zip lining biggest zipline over water in the world. I panicked at the top.. Girl said to me " do things that make you scared " I did it and was breathtaking . I literally was in tears of fear looking doen at the top. Very strange for me to panic in this way.

Lounging aft at beach was really relaxing and nice

Lounging on cruise and reading after we got back. Beauty brought us a big plate of all dressed nachos to accompany our margaritas

Chase sneaked away and discreetly ordered room service and movie and lost track of time and broke rule of outside until 6pm. I forgave him quickly . He knows what he likes by 15yrs I guess!

Beauty and outstanding big heart for others less fortunate. She bought waterside pass and homemade bracelets for 5 friends to “help Haiti”. with her money. This girl will travel all over the world one day helping others: I can feel it building in her

Magic show at 7pm and me hour to myself . First hour since Thursday night!

Dinner with a calmer sea and a much better menu than the last few nights. It is amazing to watch our kids order rack of lamb, scallops in wine sauce , salmon in lemone sauce and spinich ricotta. All that pushing of food at home over the years is paying off finally it seems - especially with Bear. He has the most refined palette just like his Dad

We had a super entertaining dinner laughing and talking and taking pictures of each other’s teeth. The cherry on top was when Bear said " can we all come and crumble together in your bed? Aka cuddle

Ok so only 1/3 actually showed up .Not even Bear!) But it was the thought that counted anyways right ?

This is precisely what I will always love about vacations and unstructured time. What I love about disconnecting. We end up making what is truly a priority for us a true priority and a special 10 days

A perfect ending to a perfect day. Kids tucked in safely in room right next to ours attached only by our joint outside balcony . A romantic night for us- some alone time- time to stand out late at night on the balcony and do what we do best; gaze at the ocean and hear the waves lap . Look up at the sky and wish our hearts desires.

Feeling in that moment that I had it all. Health . My loving man. My beautiful children. My Mom back to good health and safe and wonderful friends that sustain me like oxygen . Both near and far. The real thing. And a future full of potential to realize everything I have built my solid foundation on.

And as the warm wind blew my hair and I felt my husband lean down and kiss my head I felt a feeling so often foreign to me most of my life. Peace . To just let life carry me to all the places I belong. Like the waves beneath me in that moment.

Goodnight.

Days at Sea

Yup lucky us.. Something seems to be wrong with the boat stabilizer on this cruise. Resulting in 4/5 normally never seasick people who are super used to boats barely being able to stand up or eat when inside the cruise!!!! A bit of a challenge so far I am thinking. I am praying that once we make it to Caribbean tomorrow seas will be calmer and maybe they can also fix this slight unpleasant technicality??? Perhaps??

Our first and last days are days at sea. Our least favorite. Lots of fun things to do and to eat but not half as exciting as the places we are on our way to. Most of us are a bit claustrophobic and love big vast land and sea at our disposal. Inside restaurants and bars just don't do it for us. But we still had great times on at sea days and very very relaxing to literally lounge around and read all day. This cruise is also very different than the Mediterranean one we did with Bear in that you can feel every movement of the boat. Let’s just say we did not bring enough ginger Gravol!

Highlights days at sea:

Getting used to lots of rocking (remember not sissies her boat lovers and sailors!)

April fool’s day joke and Easter chocolates

Waking up and Emma at door on balcony like a little angel

Luxurious day of reading and relaxing in the sun Emma made a friend ! An arranged friendship of sorts

Tristan and basketball all day!!

Nick the introvert in big crowds as us respecting that. Getting him to read “smoke and mirrors" will likely be the best thing that ever happened to him

Ping pong Formal night and show. Note : one of the downsides of cruises is getting dressed up at night. We hate that part- feels like we are on our way to Sunday church in the sun. Yuck. But we seem to be the only ones everyone else is out renting tuxes for tonight. I find this pretty strange but I am sure they find me equally boring!

Just having time with my kids. As a family. Together . Alone. Realizing that candy and music make Beauty happiest. Realizing how sporty and athletic Bear is. Realizing how absolutely funny Chase is and his amazing laugh

Getting to enjoy time without structure. Realizing what I fancy and what I don't

Planning our financial future as we bought two copies of the same book to read and learn from

Even if we are all a bit tipsy turvy.. It is an adventure that we are sharing. nausea together is very bonding:)

Florida

So you can see I have been absent I guess? Sorry for no warning life got so hectic before we left with my Mom’s surgery and tying up work. So we embarked on a family of five vacation which we do every second year. Two days Orlando and half a day surfing on cocoa beach and then a cruise in Caribbean for  7 days! We booked this more than a year ago and have been anticipating it for what seems like forever!

Orlando highlights:

Downtown Disney nice lunch and roasted garlic

Wonderworks and comedy dinner show

Pool in morning and kid’s sun tanning. They are at the age they actually sit and suntan-love that peace

Kids decided on SeaWorld over Universal to save us money :))

Rollercoaster scariest of a lifetime upside down whole time!!!!!!

Best luck ever no line on Easter on rollercoaster two times!!

Great pasta and pizza bar at lunch

Dip Dots at 12 dollars? (our preretirement funds!!!)

Allowed saying “phoque” all day :) since at SeaWorld and that means seal in French. How liberating for kids!!

Bear promising he will take us all back to Florida one day when he makes a lot of money and needs to find a way to spend it. Bring it on!! (he said as long as they get to say phoque all day again)

Highlights Cocoa Beach

Worst motel of a lifetime so yucky and eww. Loved that my kids realized that money does not grow on trees as we deliberately tried to choose a cheap motel on ocean to surf.  We had fun late at night in the crappy MacDonald’s and filled with obnoxious loud people at 11pm. The kids are often also loud and obnoxious and so gave them a taste of their own medicine

Me in yogurt shop and tasting yogurt and not buying it and humiliating my entire family

Surfing lessons early in the morning for the boys:)) they loved it. I have always thought of them as surfers.

Beach for me and girl and Daddy:))) yummy Thai noodles from the pier and lovely walk down the beautiful cocoa beach

All in all a great start to a wonderful week on a cruise which we board at 3 pm Sunday. A great way to unwind and relax before this magnificent sail abroad. Despite the crappy motel and packing and unpacking in two different hotels and places it was relaxing and sunny and wonderful. Feels also great to not be so connected to back home

Happy Easter everyone! First year for us no ham and Easter hunt although when I can find that suitcase kids will have a little treat on cruise when they wake up tomorrow.

Fell in Love Tonight

There is always that moment

That moment when your love deepens

And even when your love is already super deep you discover yet another layer of it .Tonight was that night for me with Beauty:) my girl

Maybe she let down her guard a bit and maybe I opened my heart a it more?

We sat at the last cruise dinner side by side and ignored the three boys. We talked and talked and talked. About boys boys and boys.. Her new interest it seems. And we just had a great time. She will miss the cruise the most as she loves travel as much as Savvy does.  She started telling me about all the places in the world she wants to go and the people and countries she wants to help. She is passionate this girl of mine. She is lit up from the inside. She sparkles.

Tonight I only had eyes for her

And it was reciprocal

I got a piece of her she often reserves for Daddy only. It really was an important night I felt it in every bone of my body.  A slight but critical shift This precious and unstructured time allowed it on fully.

As I head back to work soon... one less everyday friend there, I keep searching for the sign or gift left behind that will make it feel ok?

Tonight I think I found it in the heart of my child. The child that made a difference for her in her own life in her own way... A new chapter has begun.

Love you Trouble!!! (Her nickname... Used to be mine years ago at work and now I am sharing it with her)

My  tiny heart birthmark near my heart is for you little beauty trouble. Thanks for making the cruise worth every single penny. I am so excited for your alone trip. I will count down the days for that bonding and special time together a year from now

Going Back Home

(Was away 10 days with family on cruise in Caribbean!  I will post first (below) and last (this) blogs now from airport. In between blogs about trip will follow with pictures this week)

Most often I judge any trip by the quality of books I read. I read three excellent ones this trip. Not enough reading time but plenty for my soul. I loved my three books. Equals great vacation for me.

After tomorrow we will be on our way back into reality. It's always a strange feeling after vacation. We are ions away from any type of reality here.

Overall this trip was really great. Every moment of it. There are parts of cruising I like and other parts I like less but it was a great way to get away as a family and spend a lot of quality time together.

Going home this time will be strange in many ways. I am going home to things that are not the same. Hubby's office renovation will have come a long way ok while we have been gone 10 days... Imagine we have not checked email once so have no idea what is going on exactly. He will move in on April 26!  Ready or not. A big step for a guy who has been renting an office in the same building for 30 yrs. To own and have renovated an old house and made it into an office in a very short period of time.

I will be going back to a slew of emails and likely the announcement of my new boss. I have so much work right now and this year on many big projects... Combined with a new leader who will depend on me a year a lot will be particularly busy at work.

And the book I am co-authoring... Almost finished chapter 5 which will make it half written! I cannot believe we are there already. I can’t believe I have found a way to fit this dream into my life. I can’t believe I am doing it.

And a close friend and special person in my life... will not be there when I get back. She has moved and it has weighed on me during this trip. I know with certainty we will stay close and connected.. but I also know I will miss my everyday friend. I cannot picture her not stopping by. Somehow my heart is heavy on this one.

And Chase... a whole new chapter begins on Tuesday of this week when he will start Concerta.  A well-researched and well thought out and planned and big decision which was not at all easy. My biggest fear is that he will lose some of the sparkle that has lit him up and our family for so many years.. My biggest hope that I can bring this sparkle even further into focus for him.(next title of a book!!) That he will finally feel the benefits of all the hard work he does. Just before the holiday he took a science exam that we and a tutor had tested him on and we all expected him to get over 85 percent and him too. He got 60 percent and it crushed him and perplexed him and us.

I won't let this continue to happen to a kid who studied for so many hours diligently :(

Concerta it will be as of next week. I am scared.

And then all the lovely things to go home to as well. Seeing my Mom on Monday and maybe getting to eat a sandwich with her after her long liquid diet.  Monday night seeing Soul keeper and the kids. Thursday night at Oprah show with my Mom who managed to get us last minute tickets and getting to speak on the phone with Savvy. Going back to work I love and even if it will change knowing that change is what I am best at when it comes down to it and supporting my new boss’s transition to role in the best way I can.

Vacation is wonderful. But when I think about it life is even better.

I love our days in paradise and cannot even begin how to articulate what great experience these getaways provide for our family...but more than anything...

I truly value the gift of an ordinary day.

And I am glad that I am at a place in my life where even ordinary day I can view as extraordinary most days. And vacations are becoming the cherry on top and not what I used to need as pure oxygen.I still love them but I also love most days too. It is still hard to go back home after such a lovely time-but a lot less harder than it used to be

I loved hearing his deep and throaty laugh of happiness. I loved seeing her cuddle on her daddy's lap. I loved watching him order off the menu. I loved looking at the stars and sea with him under a sweet kiss. I love this family of mine fiercely. And I will make it my life's purpose to keep them near us for as long as would possibly make sense for them to grow into mature and healthy adults. We are keeping these kids close to us in life.

Despite all the good stuff you can always tell when a vacation is coming to an end can't you? Our minds start racing more towards the week ahead, the kids start listening less and disobeying more, we as a couple start being less affectionate and more short with each other , we start looking ahead and planning vs. being in the present . The food starts becoming a bit boring and the mess in re kid’s room starts getting noticed more and nagged about often.

And when this happens... As it always does, it means transition is around the corner.... And change is about to occur.... And it is in this space that our family struggles the most with.

And we know clear as day that when we are in this space that vacation is over and it is time to settle ourselves back at home.

Our last cruise dinner tonight was the best yet. Over the week we formed a special bond with an old Indian gentleman who was our waiter. He is about to retire and took a strong liking to our family and kids especially. It was heartwarming to see our kids talk to him and share with him. He was also an excellent waiter and did not even need to take our orders to know what we liked. I got special Indian food most nights made just for me.

It was hard to say goodbye. Also the show tonight was incredible with a great comedy act and trapeze and jazz band. Our last night was really memorable. Hard to think it will be two years from now that we get to do something similar again. But I know we are super blessed to do it at all.

Goodbye wonderful trip 2013!!! You are exactly what we had hoped for.

Get in the Picture

(sorry for no warning!! Was away 10 days with family to Orlando and Caribbean cruise.  At airport on way home now and will post first and last blog. All the in between parts about our vacation and pictures I will post this week)

My goal on this trip is to be more present.

Vacations are so precious. Expensive in time, in money in energy. I want to lap in every single minute when I am blessed enough to be on them. More importantly to treasure these precious moments the five of us. I started counting on my fingers how many more vacations we will be easily the five of us without kids jobs/college etc. making it hard. I counted one (Chase will be. 18) if we are lucky two. (Chase will be 20!!) in between we will travel alone or with one kid at a time. That is our formula and it is brilliant if I do day so myselfJ. The 1-1 grade 6 trips were/are amazing.. The perfect age and so bonding. We will do another alone trip after high school and enjoy that unique stage too. It really is just an excuse to travel! We feel strongly that any type of cultural educational trip will involve at least one kid. Romantic trips for us. Adventure and culture for all of us. For us there is nothing like the bonding that goes one travelling with one kid at a time.

So part of me being present was to do just that on this trip. Less pictures and less recording on blogs. No texting (except mom every few days to check on her and a couple of oxygen emails to bffs) and no emailing in that moment at night where I might usually blog... I now read or sleep. In the moment waiting for the others on the roller coasters that make me sick.. I people watch. In the car moments I make my kids laugh. There are so many moments and so little time to have them in it feels.

I want a life with no regrets. These vacations are priceless as far as I am concerned. As I told a friend recently who suggested I save money in future by not going on these vacations: I would rather juggle in the streets as a night job than not have these times with my family. Outside of travel we are not big going out to dinner people or shows or movies out and presents and popcorn. This is the time we do this stuff in.

We are all about experiences this family. Now 3 days in we have not visited one gift shop one store or bought one single thing. And I can almost guarantee it will remain that way. We buy time and very little of anything else. The kids were passed down this gene for sure. Have u ever met a kid who goes to theme parks and never asks for anything even when they were 4 years old ? They have always asked for experiences and never for things. Their parent's children to the core.

So as I start the first couple of days of vacation and I decompress, my goal is to be there fully. Not necessarily disturb the moment with a picture or a note or even a thought if I can help myself. But to just bask in the present even if that means that in the future I will only have my memory to remember those moments in many cases. Don’t get me wrong there will still be pictures..  but never at the expense of a moment. I won't disturb the peace and present to get them because I know... that I am at my very best...

When I get in the picture.

The real picture.
