Lost in Corfu
It is incredible how big the world is and how small we are
compared to it. We have been travelling for 9 days from Montreal to Rome, to
Naples, to Sicily, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Venice and now Greece. Today
Corfu, tomorrow Santorini and then Mykonos and Katakolon. It seems that we have
covered so much ground but really we have only seen just a small piece of our
huge world! And it is fascinating to see it through the eyes of a young
traveller for who it is her first experience in Europe.
She has travelled before but mainly to more familiar lands
and mainly hot islands and beaches. But it is her first time experiencing the
different culture, the different languages, the different traditions and
heritage of Europe. And it is so different than what we are used to. She has
done very little homework during these 9 days and has missed many days of
school. But in the end, she will have learned more about the world we live in
these 9 days than she could have possibly learnt in her class room.
And that is what is so fascinating about travel. We never
would have had the conversations we did. We never would have seen the sights we
saw. We never would have experienced those little moments that make memories
forever. Kissing matches, tickling fights, funny pretend phone calls. Beauty
has grown up really fast and this time together has given us the chance to put
things on pause for a little while and appreciate the young woman she is
becoming.
Why did I choose Lost in Corfu as the title of my blog? Just
because it was the marking point of the day. We rented a car in Corfu today and
only had a few hours to tour the island, visit a few nice places, have lunch
and come back in time for the all aboard time of 3:00PM. As the driver, I am
the captain of this little crew and I have to make sure I plan our itinerary so
that we don’t end up missing the boat! I knew where we were heading and decided
to come back a different way which brought us through the main city of Corfu
where I was a bit worried we might get a bit lost with not much time to spare.
Which is exactly what happened. Well, not so bad, but we did turn around a bit
before we found our way. Just stressful when you know the ship might leave
without you!!! All this to say that sometimes our fears come true simply
because we allow them to. So really the trick should be not to worry about
things out of our control. There is no point. If we do, we give our worries
space to grow.
Tomorrow Santorini where we went 18 yrs ago on our honeymoon!
This time seeing it with our youngest child and through her eyes. But today... we
will make it a point- to lose ourselves
and simply enjoy.
